/Lord Cholmondeley, owner of Houghton, said:
“Tony Cragg at Houghton will be the 6th contemporary art exhibition held at Houghton since 2015. I am particularly grateful to Tony for the chance to show his sculptures here in Norfolk, and for agreeing to curate the exhibition himself. I have always been a great admirer of his work, and it will be incredibly exciting to see how it will come together and interact with the historic landscape and interiors of Houghton. As life is no longer, for the moment, as we once knew it due to the challenges of COVID 19, we have been faced with some extraordinary logistical problems; not least transporting exhibits to the UK from Tony’s studio in Germany. I would especially like to thank Dorotheum and Thaddaeus Ropac Gallery for their support as this year’s exhibition sponsors.’’
Houghton Hall was built by Sir Robert Walpole, Great Britain’s first Prime Minister in around 1722. Designed by prominent Georgian architects Colen Campbell and James Gibbs, it is one of the country’s finest examples of Palladian architecture. Houghton and its estate passed to the Cholmondeley family at the end of the 18th Century and remains a family home. The house and award-winning gardens have been open to the public since 1976.

Special Guest: Martin Carthy LIVE & Q&A
We are beyond excited to announce that special guest Martin Carthy will join us LIVE on the Saturday, 31st July from 8PM.
Be sure not to miss him by purchasing your ticket here, for only £5 pp.
Lifetime Achievement Award – BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards 2014
For more than 50 years Martin Carthy has been one of folk music's greatest innovators, one of its best loved, most enthusiastic and, at times, most quietly controversial of figures. His skill, stage presence and natural charm have won him many admirers, not only from within the folk scene, but also far beyond it.
Trailblazing musical partnerships with, amongst others, Steeleye Span, Dave Swarbrick and his award-winning wife (Norma Waterson) and daughter Eliza Carthy have resulted in more than 40 albums, but Martin has only recorded 10 solo albums, of which the much anticipated Waiting for Angels (Topic TSCD527) was the latest. Whether in the folk clubs (which he continues to champion), on the concert stage or making TV appearances (he was the subject of the acclaimed `Originals' music documentary strand on BBC 2) - there are few roles that Martin Carthy hasn't played.
He's a ballad singer, a ground-breaking acoustic and electric-guitarist and an authoritative interpreter of newly composed material. He always prefers to follow an insatiable musical curiosity rather than cash in on his unrivalled position. Perhaps, most significant of all, are his settings of traditional songs with guitar, which have influenced a generation of artists, including Bob Dylan and Paul Simon, on both sides of the Atlantic.
“Arguably the greatest English folk song performer, writer, collector and editor of them all”
— Q Magazine
“Carthy is the master of the ballad of substance, songs that tell stories, whether they are traditional, his own or from contemporary writers.”
— The Telegraph

/28th July - Wonder with Grimm
If you join Heartbreak Productions in the woods today, you’re sure of a big surprise!
It’s Grimm Night and the forest spirits are wandering abroad. Never heard of the Grimm? It used to live in the Black Forest, but now travels through forests across the UK looking for children’s voices to steal. To prevent this spectre from taking our voices we must tell it stories, so we gather together to re-tell the stories from whence it took its name - the fairy tales of the Brothers Grimm.
But these aren’t the stories as you know them. We’ve shaken them up and twisted them around for today’s audience. Rumplestiltskin is a tech wizard who, instead of spinning straw into gold, manipulates algorithms for followers on “chit chat”. Rapunzel cuts off her own hair and ties it to the bed to climb out of her tower — no prince necessary. The final fairy tale is an original penned by Heartbreak’s “Find Your Voice” contest winner, Kasper, a year 4 student from Leamington Spa. His story “Sin Der Fella” is an original take on Cinderella.
So… What if Rapunzel escaped her tower? Or Snow White didn’t wake up? Join us for an evening of enchanting storytelling full of magic, puppetry, and music, as we enter into the fantastical world of the Brothers Grimm with altered endings and a modern twist.
4th August - The Further Adventures of Doctor Dolittle
Dr Dolittle is making his return to Holkham Walled Garden with even more adventures! Join Jip the dog, Dab Dab the duck, Gub Gub the pig and Polynesia the Parrot for a sing-a-long evening of puppetry and entertainment! Where in the world will the gang go? Will they even stay on this world? Which new animals will they help along the way? Will the rats still have pithy observations to make? and most importantly, is Gub Gub still dreaming of cake!?
11th August - David Walliam’s Mr Stink by Heartbreak Productions
Chloe’s particularly smelly new friend, Mr Stink. One perfectly normal afternoon in an average English town two restless souls unite on a park bench – one of them the lonely 12 year old Chloe Crumb and the other an incredibly smelly homeless man. Oh, and let’s not forget his loyal dog, the Duchess. Chloe’s curiosity and kindness pave the way for this extraordinary and rewarding friendship that takes them to the heady heights of live television and Downing Street via a garden shed.
Join Heartbreak Productions in Holkham Walled Garden for David Walliams’ best-seller Mr Stink on the outdoor stage. Pack a picnic, grab a chair and dress for the weather. Packed with fun, humour and a heart-warming message, this touching tale provides the perfect family entertainment.

Recipients of the Royal Philharmonic Society’s Albert and Eugenie Frost Chamber Music Prize (2019/20), the Echéa Quartet was formed in 2017 at the Royal Academy of Music, London. They are recent winners of the ‘Tremplin' at the Philharmonie de Paris's String Quartet Biennale (2020) and prizewinners of the International Anton Rubinstein Competition (2017). The quartet are currently Chamber Music Fellows at the Royal College of Music, artists for the Concordia and City Music Foundations (2019/20) and Yeomen of the Worshipful Company of Musicians. The quartet are mentored by John Myerscough, Simon Rowland-Jones and Mathieu Herzog.
During the disruption of the last year the Echéa Quartet has spent a of lot of time working together at the Yorke Trust in South Creake, finding it a haven in which they could focus on their work together and develop in a way that might not have happened so easily in normal times. They are particularly keen therefore to give a concert in the village that has become such an important part of their life, and they look forward to meeting you, who have kindly supported them and other young musicians involved with NNMF.
The quartet has appeared at international festivals such as Ferrandou Musique (France), Festival de los Siete Lagos (Argentina) and West Cork Chamber Music (Ireland). They have also attended a residency at the Banff Centre (2019). The quartet has performed in venues such as the Musikverein (Vienna), Wigmore Hall (London), Philharmonie de Paris and collaborated with Marin Alsop at the World Economic Forum (Switzerland).
The quartet was featured on BBC Radio 3's 'In Tune', and more recently on CBC National Radio (Canada) as part of their six-week tour of the west coast of North America (2019).
